CELPIP to CLB Conversion Chart

One of the major advantages of the CELPIP test is its straightforward score-to-CLB mapping. Unlike IELTS, where you need a complex conversion table, CELPIP scores map directly to Canadian Language Benchmark levels on a 1:1 basis. This means a CELPIP score of 7 is exactly CLB 7, a score of 9 is CLB 9, and so on. This simplicity makes it much easier for immigration applicants to plan their language preparation targets.

CELPIP LevelCLB LevelIELTS EquivalentProficiency Description
12128.5–9.0Advanced proficiency
11118.0Advanced proficiency

665.5Developing competence
555.0Basic – CEC minimum (TEER 2/3)
444.5Initial proficiency
334.0Minimal proficiency
MBelow 3Below 4.0Minimal / insufficient

Understanding this chart is essential for setting your preparation targets. If you are applying through the Express Entry system for Canada PR, you must achieve at least CLB 7 in every component to qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker stream. However, achieving CLB 9 or above in all abilities significantly increases your CRS score and chances of receiving an ITA.

CELPIP CRS Points Table

The Comprehensive Ranking System awards language points per ability (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). The table below shows the CRS points you earn for each CLB level, per individual ability. Your total language CRS is the sum of all four abilities. The maximum for the first official language is 136 points without a spouse and 128 points with a spouse.

Canada PR Minimum Score Requirement

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW): You must score CLB 7 (CELPIP 7) in ALL four abilities — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Scoring below this in even one ability means you do not meet the minimum threshold.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC): NOC TEER 0/1 requires CLB 7, while NOC TEER 2/3 requires CLB 5 (CELPIP 5).

Federal Skilled Trades (FST): CLB 5 in Speaking and Listening, CLB 4 in Reading and Writing.

💡 Higher scores = more CRS points = better chances. Aim for CLB 9+ in all abilities to maximize your Express Entry profile. Learn more about CELPIP for Canada PR.

CELPIP vs IELTS Score Comparison

Both CELPIP and IELTS General Training are accepted by IRCC for Canadian immigration. The key difference is in scoring: CELPIP uses a level system (M to 12) that maps directly to CLB, while IELTS uses band scores (0–9) that require a conversion chart. Many test-takers prefer CELPIP because it is entirely computer-based and uses Canadian English accents and contexts. For a more detailed comparison, check our CELPIP vs IELTS guide.

CLB LevelCELPIP ScoreIELTS (R)IELTS (W)IELTS (L)IELTS (S)
CLB 10108.07.58.57.5
CLB 997.07.08.07.0
CLB 886.56.57.56.5
CLB 776.06.06.06.0
CLB 665.05.55.55.5
CLB 554.05.05.05.0
CLB 443.54.04.54.0

Notice how IELTS requires different scores for each ability to reach the same CLB level. For instance, achieving CLB 9 through IELTS requires a Listening band of 8.0, but only 7.0 for Reading. CELPIP simplifies this: a score of 9 in any ability means CLB 9, period. This makes target-setting considerably easier for immigration applicants. The computer-based format of CELPIP also means you type your writing responses — the same way the real test works — giving you a more authentic preparation experience.

For candidates considering which test to take, we strongly recommend evaluating your comfort with computer-based testing, your familiarity with Canadian English accents, and your preference for scoring simplicity. How CELPIP Scores Impact Your CRS

Your first official language proficiency is one of the most significant factors in the Comprehensive Ranking System. Language points can account for nearly 25% of your total CRS score (136 out of 600 core points for single applicants). This means improving your CELPIP score by even one level can add 7–17 additional CRS points per ability.

CLB 7 → CLB 9

Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in a single ability adds 14 CRS points (without spouse). Across all four abilities, that is a potential 56-point gain — often enough to turn a borderline profile into a competitive one.

Maximum Language Points

Achieving CLB 10+ (CELPIP 10–12) in all four abilities earns you the maximum 136 CRS points (without spouse). That is the equivalent of gaining nearly 4 extra years of age advantage. Language is the fastest-to-improve CRS factor.

Beyond core CRS points, your language scores also impact skill transferability factors. Strong language combined with education or Canadian work experience unlocks additional bonus points under CRS. The strategic advantage of higher CELPIP scores cannot be overstated — each level increase brings measurable, quantifiable improvements to your immigration profile.

Many candidates underestimate the power of focused test preparation.
